Chapter 20

Major Tom

Jorgie stretched out her legs and leaned back against the wall. The weak, early morning sun warmed her face and shoulders. The weather was cooling. She cast a glance at the rear of the house. Hopefully, she and Leo would have the shell in place before the rains started, and before temperatures dropped to single digits. At least Ginger had confirmed all their pegs and lines were correctly positioned, taking away one of her biggest worries.

She took a mouthful of her tea. Marta had done an amazing job shifting rubble, and the backyard was nearly clear. The woman looked fragile, unused to physical work, but her grit and stamina had been impressive. The image of her, dirty and dusty, dog-tired, but still plodding on, came into Jorgie’s mind. Marta was not someone who gave up.

The faint chimes of a yoga soundtrack drifted from the yard next door, and Jorgie pictured Marta in her underwear stretching into a pose. Or was it cool enough this morning that she’d donned more clothes? Yoga pants and a T-shirt, maybe. Jorgie wouldn’t look; but she’d ask the next time they saw each other.

“Meow.”

A small, furry body rubbed itself against her shins.

“You again.” Jorgie bent to pet the little tabby.

It purred in pleasure and pressed its head against her.

“Are you hungry?” The cat was still skinny. If anyone else was feeding it, it wasn’t very often. “Would you like more tuna?”

“Meow.”

“I’ll take that as a yes.” She rose slowly, careful not to startle the cat, and pushed through the black plastic to the cupboard that now housed her meagre groceries. There were still a couple of tins of tuna. She found the same dish and another for water and took them back to the yard.

The tabby had its head in the dish almost before it was on the ground.

Jorgie watched it lick the bowl clean with methodical precision. As she picked up her cooling tea, the faint strains of music from next door ceased. She imagined Marta performing a final stretch and picking up her mat. It was only a few hours since they’d last seen each other. In other circumstances, she might, even now, be in bed, with Marta pressing kisses to her lips. Or she might be waking her with a trail of kisses down to her breasts.

She set down her tea and went over to the fence. “Hey, Marta. Are you still there?”

“About to head inside for a shower and a coffee. Are you peeping through the gap?”

“No! Of course not!” It was only when Marta laughed that Jorgie realised she was joking. “I heard your music stop. Do you have time to come around for a cuppa on this side of the fence?”

“Sure, if it’s quick,” Marta said.

“I’ll put the kettle on.”

The cat had finished scouring the bowl and was now watching Jorgie from the top of the gatepost.

She picked up the empty bowl and went back to the remains of the kitchen, flicked the switch on the kettle, then continued to the front door.
